Western Art and Culture Before 1400

Course Description: Survey of the visual arts of the Near Eastern, Mediterranean, Western Europe and Islamic civilizations from the pre-historic era through the late Gothic period. Emphasis is on the formal, stylistic, technical and contextual developments in painting, sculpture, architectural, functional, and performing arts with reference to the cultural, social, religious, political and historical factors for which these works were produced.

Week 3 Predynastic, Old Kingdom Egyptian Art
Week 4 Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom Egyptian Art
Week 5 Aegean Art [first essay due]
Week 6 Greek Art
Week 7 Hellenistic and Etruscan Art
Week 8 [Mid Term Exam], Roman Art
Week 9 Early Christian Art, Byzantine Art
Week 10 Early Medieval Art In the West, [second essay due]
Week 11 Romanesque Art
Week 12 Early and High Gothic
Week 13 Late Gothic and Gothic Outside of France
Week 14 Islamic Art
Week 15 Review Session, [third essay is due], [Final Exam]

Course Requirements: Class attendance, reading of assigned chapters, Mid-Term Exam [30%], Final Exam [40%], and three one to three page essays [30%].
