Western Art and Culture Before 1400

Course Description: Survey of the visual arts of the Near Eastern, Mediterranean, Western Europe and Islamic civilizations from the pre-historic era through the late Gothic period. Emphasis is on the formal, stylistic, technical and contextual developments in painting, sculpture, architectural, functional, and performing arts with reference to the cultural, social, religious, political and historical factors for which these works were produced.

Course Requirements: Class attendance, reading of assigned chapters, Mid-Term Exam [30%], Final Exam [40%], and three one to three page essays [30%].
