AR 346 Section 1: Selected Topics in Art History;
The Avant-Garde and the Text
Steven Michael Vroom: Instructor
Course Description: A critical survey of the posters, little reviews, chapbooks, and other printed ephemera produced by avant-garde artistic communities in the twentieth century. Artists from both Europe and the
United States will be interrogated to reveal the many thoughts and creative strategies of how the avant-garde uses the text to communicate.
Course Requirements: (1.) Two 5-7 page essays which examine a particular case or instance of the use of the text by the avant-garde. [30% each] (2.) The final examination [40%] Class attendance is afactor in final evaluation.
