OBViouS: Object Based Video Sculpture started out as a vague idea of investigating how sculptors use video as an element in their work. What emerged were two different approaches. Objects, which have video projected onto them and objects which have video as a structural element. This exhibition has examples of both approaches.
I would like to thank artists Tina Aufiero, Casey Cahoy, Joseph Gray, Caroline Kapp, and Tony Weathers for lending the works to the exhibition. Thanks also to the Board and Staff of 911 Media Arts Center for their splendid support and assistance in realizing this exhibition. OBViouS is a sampler of different contemporary approaches to sculpture which have video as a common thread. The equivocal nature of the practice of making sculpture allows for the curator to "state the obvious".
The show runs from May 15th through June 30th

Tina Aufiero's swansonata from 2002 consists of a found suitcase, VGA monitor, feathers and is powered by a mac mini. The tranquill sounds of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata are joined by video of a Swan among a clump of reeds in a park.Tina Aufiero received her MFA from Parsons in 2005, and her BFA from RISDI in 1981. Her exhibitions include PS 1, Cheryl McGinnis Gallery, Chelsea Museum, and Robert Lehman Gallery at UrbanGlass in New York and internationally

Casey Cahoy's Case in Flight is a portable video sculpture created in 2005. Using found objects, such as an old violin case and optical glass, Cahoy combines these elements with a SONY Watchman portable DVD player. The video is of the interior of a small airplane during take-offs and landings. The title is a clever play on both the artist's name and the content of the piece The video in this piece is a key structural element to the sculpture.Casey Cahoy received his BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in 1999. He currently is the owner/operator of Carmacazzi a purveyor of fine fashion urban apparel. He has exhibited both regionally and nationally.

Joseph Gray's Cube Etude 1.0 was created for this exhibition. A one foot square cube is covered with video projections on each side. Video feedback is acheived by using the on board camera from an i-mac. Joseph Gray received his BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in 1999. His recent exhibitions and performances include Meridian Gallery, San Francisco, Unit B, San Antonio TX, and 911 Media Art Center and On the Boards in Seattle.

Caroline Kapp's Pivot Point was also created for this exhibition. Two white fence posts srve as an object surface to video projection of ropes going up and down a pulley. The viewer is left to construct the rest of the image in their imagination. Caroline Kapp received her MFA from the UW in 2007, and her BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in 2000. She has also studied at the Burren College of Art, County Clare, Ireland and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL. She has exhibited throughout Seattle and Internationally.

Tony Weathers' A Failed Bid for Clemancy is the third peice created for this exhibition. A found fireplace mantle servs as a platform for a small monitor and desk lamp. The video image is synched to cause the desk lamp to turn off and on.Tony Weathers received his BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in 2000 and has since been granted the Artist Trust GAP and Fellowship, apprenticed for Gary Hill Studios, and exhibited throughout Seattle and in Europe.

Exhibition Hours: Mon-Sat Noon to 6 pm
