On Thursday, August 28, 2003 artists Lance Wakeling and Austin Plann-Curley organized 11 artists to create A-board art pieces. These propped up billboards make their appearance on the sidewalks on Capitol Hill, Seattle.

Lance Wakeling's contribution includes his trademark wantbuyhave text and he serves up A-boards within A-boards for a rich thick pictorial texture which is a part of Broadway's charm. He is a wry chronicler of both his coummunity and the world at large.

Sam Trout first plays with the concept of the A-board by using two. Even the chain used to secure the A-board is in a compositionally artful way. On one side of the boards, a stylish Capitol Hill mother restrains her overly hyperactive child by means of a leash. It is a reminder of the old Joop ad tag "a child is the ultimate pet".

The other side depicts a young, buff, stylish Capitol Hill urban techno-pop club kid walking his equally hyperactive dog on a leash. Both sides of the A-boards are rendered in the distinctive Sam Trout style. They are prominently located on the corner of Pike & Broadway.

flatchestedmamma gives us an A-Board where she literally mails her heart. Her use of the international internet icon for electronic mail is a deft commentary of both virtual and social change. The bright colors and the simple graphics really grab your eye while tickling your funny bone.

Gillian Rose coifs a magical realism type A-board. Sited by an abandoned grocery story, the composition places vital organs next to telephones. The area is so stark that this little A-board is like a palm be-decked oasis in the middles of Baja California.

Matthew Parker serves up an A-board with wood grain and a cartoon balloon with the word "TREE". The fact that the board is chained to a tree by the Safeway on 15th makes the artistic intention very clear.

Scary d/ Liz Johnson proved the ultimate generic A-board in front of the Victrola Cafe. Thursday evening at 8:00pm the 11 artists will celebrate at Canterbury Ale and Eats, 534 15th Avenue E. Lance Wakeling, Balsa, Chuck Dong, Elias-John Swann, flatchestedmamma, Gillian Rose, Scary d/ Liz Johnson, Matthew Parker, Sage Radke, Sam Trout, and Sonya Stockton all participated in this unique event.
