After years of writing in the virtual realm, I have noticed a decline in Visual Art reporting in the mainstream media. Into this void, many artists and critics have opted to put their thoughts on-line for all to read. Here are a few notable journals which I find valuable.
In Seattle the best blog is by Carolyn Zick, entitled studio notebook. As a working artist she manages to see a lot of shows in Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and Vancouver BC. Here posts are frequent and very detailed about what she is seeing. She manages all of this with a straight forward, elegant. sparse writing style that always leaves me wanting more. Her links page provides an important all -in-one resource for the region. This is a blog that you can spend a lot of time on with entries which date back to February 2001. I also find her work very unique from the usual Seattle process as practice as art.
Artdish is a web site that features some very good in-depth pieces. Founded by Seattle arts writer Victoria Josslin, it is currently edited by Jim Demetre. Their coverage of the major events in the Puget Sound is well balanced and well written. The Artdish blog is not really a blog at all but an extended essay of the web-site. The three posts have been from 3 weeks to a month apart. It would be better if the called it a column and not a blog. Still when it does appear it is worth reading.
Anna L Conti's blog is dynamic, vibrant and very insightful. Interviews, images, and interpretations abound in this SF Bay area blog. The fact that she is a working studio artist gives this blog a very defined perspective. I like how she does not talk about the art work in isolation but rather includes photos and quotes from the artist, giving the work a more informed context.
Arts Journal.com has several prominent bloggers.MODERN ART NOTES, Tyler Green's modern and contemporary art blog is replete with news, reviews , and links to other important areas in the art bloggersphere. He manages to convey the impact of the corporate take over of our cultural institutions without sounding shrill or Cassandra like with predictions of doom. The best part about his writing is in the way he never underestimates the intelligence of his audience. The Honorable Terry Teachout also has a blog worth reading entitled About Last Night
Artnotes by Ariana French is an arts and art history weblog. I like how she gives her thoughts in short bursts and then provides you with the web links to make up your own mind. Based on the east coast she seems to get to New York and yet still boosts the arts for New Orleans. Check out her "linky love" arts side bar for some very useful links.
Art.Blogging.LA
is a blog about painting, printmaking, writing, sweaters, and anything else they can think up in Los Angeles. The multiple contributors of this site keep up with art events both locally and nationally. Images, interviews and analysis pepper their web pages with a saucy disdain for the staid and conventional. I liked their recent post about Nothing Wrong in This Whole Wide World by Chris Cobb @ Adobe BookshopFor one amazing week in November, Adobe Bookshop in San Francisco agreed to allow its estimated 20,000 books to be reclassified by color. They even included an image for those of us who could not go to San Francisco by November 22.
All of these places have inks to other blogs that I did not include here. I can only suggest that you surf a bit to find more
