March brings to Seattle a new exhibition of works by Cait Willis in an unusual venue The Greenroom at the Showbox. The painter Thomas Hart Benton often would debut his recent work at Billy Rose's tavern in New York City stating that "more folks visit a bar than a museum". In choosing an unusual venue, Willis is trying to reach out to a wider public, fortunately for us it is a very inviting space which showcases some of the more promising musical talent that Seattle has to offer. Last fall I saw a set by Bill Patton which totally rocked the audience's world.

Willis is very clear about her aims and objectives. She states:
"Using acrylic on panel or canvas enables me to blur the line between abstract and representational and therefore realism and fantasy. Drawing from friends, magazines, and old snap shots I can mix up a visceral soup of images that may awaken a sense of de ja vu in the viewer. At present my series "holiday" depicts women abroad. Through them a dialogue between the tourist and sense of space takes shape. Many people go to far away places to feel changed, or to shrug off their regular lives. Yet it is hardly considered how the traveler effects the the place and people along the way to "relaxation". As globalisation becomes more the standard, and people from different worlds meet, it is inevitable that these words will collide."

She has a B.F.A degree. (Cum Laude) from Cornish College of the Arts where she studied oil and acrylic painting under Francesca Sundsten and printmaking under Kathleen Rabel. She has exhibited in; Sydney Australia, Prague Czech Republic, and Seattle. Her work is in private collections in; Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Prague, Czech Republic, Oxford, England, Seoul, South Korea, Whale Beach, Australia, and Seattle. Her print art is in the Mary Alice Cooley Print Collection at Cornish College of the Arts. In 2003 she produced 15 etchings for novella, "Buddha in the Forest" by Chandra Perera, published by Book Surge (a Division of Random House).
