Since 1985, the artist residency program at the Bemis has supported the work of more than 400 artists. These artists have come to Omaha for Bemis residencies from all over the United States and from 30 other nations. The residecny awards include studio and living space, a monthly stipend to help with expenses and the use of specialized equipment for all types of visual and performance at. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts (Bemis) is a non-profit artists' residency program dedicated to: providing artists with the opportunity to create work in a nurturing environment; to develop and promote a meaningful dialog about the contemporary arts with a local, national and international audience; to facilitate meaningful exchanges between artists and the general public through educational opportunities; providing artists the opportunity to exhibit work in a professional gallery setting.

Each year the Bemis is the temporary home to some 35 artists from all over the world. Residencies typically last for three months. Artists are provided ample living quarters and studio space. The Bemis facilities include a full wood shop, video editing room, dark room, sculpture studio, installation galleries and tech support. The Bemis presents eight to 10 exhibitions each year in its galleries and publishes a quarterly newsletter.



The Bemis facility is housed in two urban warehouses and includes a half­block of open urban property in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. The Bemis was established in 1981 by artists and is supported by the efforts of private and corporate donors and public funding.
