Historic Site of a 1937 Broadcast to be razed to make way for multi-million dollar townhomes
The impending destruction of the five century old houses that made up most of Cornish College's south campus is happening soon. It came as no surprise that these houses did not meet the historic preservation standard. The community is focusing on the wrong end of the problem. Sited in the Cornish parking lot and slated for demolition is the squat, ugly Fuller building. Given to the College by the late director of the Seattle Art Museum, Dr. Richard Fuller and his mother, the Fuller building was constructed in 1935 to house a radio school. It was the first radio school in the country. During the short life of the program a young broadcaster named Chet Huntley [NBC] got his start in media journalism. In 1936 Miss Aunt Nellie Cornish met with Edward R. Murrow (CBS) and John Royal (NBC) with the result of a national broadcast on the NBC Blue and Red networks. While not as aesthetically pleasing to look at, it is historically significant.
All of this information may be found in the book Miss Aunt Nellie: The Autobiography of Nellie C. Cornish, University of Washing Press, 1964. For an excellent overview of Capitol Hill History I would also suggest The Hill with a Future: Seattle's Capitol Hill 1900-1946, by Jacqueline B. Williams, CPK Ink, Seattle, WA 2001.
It is a hopeful thought that this structure can be relocated to an appropriate venue, the Museum of History and Industry [MOHAI] comes to mind.
